Dutch ship offering abortions

Women on Waves is a group that offers abortions and advice within international waters near countries in which abortion is illegal. Recently the ship was blocked off from a port in Morocco where abortion is in fact illegal. Apparently a youth women's organization within Morocco called the organization in hope of educating women of Morocco. The Women of Waves' leader, Rebecca Gomperts said in the article that there would be somewhat of a surprise action by the organization in lieu of the blockade. In light of all the problems within Africa regarding rape, diseases and unplanned pregnancies I am a little torn regarding the Dutch organization. It seems that the organization has the right idea but Having an abortion on a boat seems a bit out of the ordinary. I will be interested in seeing how this story plays out, specifically because of how many other countries could be affected by this organization.

  2. Besides having an abortion on a boat, which sounds as reckless as the Dutch are, I think this is a pretty daring move from their part. My take is that this situation will stir up controversy with the government of Morocco, calling for the boat's departure from their waters.

I'm assuming that if this boat is offering abortion services on the ocean-abortion must be illegal in Morocco and likely in some of the neighbouring Islamic countries.

  3. Your question of whether or not it is safe to perform an abortion on a ship definitely depends on the conditions on the ship(s). It would be interesting to see more pictures of what they actually look like and if they're sterile. But I think that this option is far better than the 600 to 800 illegal abortions taking place every day in the North African region. Those numbers are intense, for lack of a better word.

  4. It's a nice idea, but perhaps not much better than the illegal abortions that are done in those countries. We'd need to know more about the conditions on the ship, in order to accurately judge the situation. I'm all for helping these women, but it's got to be safe. Thanks for posting about this - it's always nice to know about various organizations that help others internationally.

  5. I wonder how many abortions are the women's choice in a country that prefers sons.

  6. I'm not sure whether I am in favor of this action or more confused by its motives. I like the idea that women should have a choice in the matter, but I am not so sure whether or not the boat is right way of approaching the situation.
